A Deep Dive into the 10-Year Process for ILR and British Citizenship

The Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is also known as the UK Settlement Visa. According to UK immigration laws, it is a document that gives a person immigration status after they’ve lived in the UK under a temporary visa for a specific period. Once an ILR is granted, the holder can live in the UK without any restrictions and time limits. They can also leave or enter the UK at any time with an ILR.

General Overview of the 10-Year Process forILR:

To apply for ILR on a 10-year basis, the applicant must have accumulated ten years of lawful and continuous residence in the UK. This can be done through any combination of UK visas and isn’t restricted to a single type of UK visa. There is also an 18-month limit on total time spent outside the UK during the ten years. Additionally, the applicant must not have spent longer than six months outside of the UK on a single occasion. Other requirements include passing the English language and Life in the UK tests.

When to Start the 10-Year ILR Process?

The applicant is required to file for an ILR before their current leave to remain expires. However, they aren’t allowed to apply more than 28 days before their 10-year continuous residency period is complete. The qualifying period of 10-year residency for ILR starts from the date of your first entry into the UK or the day you were granted permission to remain in the country.

Required Documents For 10-Year ILR Application:

The list of documents required for the application process of an ILR varies depending on the situation of the applicant. However, these are the documents required in most cases:

  • Valid travel ID such as a current passport
  • Biometric Residence Permit if you’ve been issued one
  • 2 colour passport size photographs
  • Police registration certificate if you were required to apply for one

Other supporting documents including proof of 10-year residency in the UK
