An Easy Guide to Getting a UK Spouse Visa Approved on the First Try
Any process when applying for a UK visa can be complex. But the process for the UK spouse visa is, unfortunately, a whole other ballgame. Not to frighten or deter you from having hope. But the truth is that from all the UK visas applied, the spouse visa gets rejected the most, mostly because of strict requirements.
Now, there are some basics you’ll need to satisfy that is legitimate. For example, as a sponsor, the person may either need to:
- Be a British citizen
- Be settled in the UK i.e., have an indefinite leave to stay in the UK, have proof of permanent residence or have a settled status
- Have humanitarian protection or refugee status in the UK
If you can tick any of the above boxes, you’re off to a great start. But what about the rest like finances and proof of a relationship? While the first one might not be a problem, how can you show your long-distance marriage to be legit?
Here’s some information that may come in handy!
All You’ll Need to Prove
First, let’s get the details out of the way that you’ll both need to provide:
- You both must be over the age of 18
- You must have met each other before the marriage
- You must be legally married
Now, regarding your individual roles, as the sponsoring partner, here are your requirements:
- You must show that you earn £18,600+ per year. If not, you must show that you have enough savings that you can sponsor your partner and live without claiming public funds
- You must provide complete financial information, i.e., salary slips, bank statements, tax returns
- You must show proof of suitable accommodation for yourself and your spouse.
For the applicant, the process requires a bit more evidence on their part. They must:
- Provide evidence that they satisfy the UK English language requirements (an IELTS result)
- Show further proof of a sustained relationship (in addition to the marriage certificate, they’ll need to provide documents such as photos of the couple, evidence of communication such screenshots of messages, call logs, etc.)
- A cover letter explaining how you intend to live with each other on a permanent basis.
