A Guide to the New Online Application System by the UKVI

As someone applying for a UK visa, you’re bound to access the new online application system designed by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Launched in November 2018, UKVCAS has significantly transformed the entire visa application process.

Navigating an online visa application as a first-timer isn’t an easy task! If you’re new to the platform, it’s only natural to feel overwhelmed by the process.

Looking for a smooth sailing experience while navigating the tricky waters of UKVCAS? Let’s simplify the process!

How to Complete the Visa Application Online

Visit www.gov.uk to start your application. With this online portal, you won’t be required to fill out any paper applications. Take the time to complete your online application carefully and pay for the application fees with your credit card. It’s possible that your total fees might also include some additional charges for the biometric collection.

Just like the paper application process, you’ll have to pay separately for the immigration health surcharge, if it’s applicable. After you’ve made the payment successfully, don’t forget to include the HIS reference on your form.

Once you’ve completed your application, you’ll be directed to Sopra Steria’s website. Book an appointment at the UKVCAS center within 5 working days, starting from the date of application completion. To help reduce the time of your appointment, upload your self-supporting documents via the Sopra Steria’s website.

Types of Visa Routes Available On the Online Visa Application Platform

As someone applying for a UK visa, you need to be aware of the visa categories that have been updated to the system. If you’re short on time, knowing some of these online categories can be helpful;

  • Tier 1 (Investor, Entrepreneur, Exceptional Talent and Graduate Entrepreneur)
  • Tier 2 (General, intra-company transfer and minister of religion)
  • Tier 4 (Student)
  • Tier 5 (Temporary worker)
  • PBS dependent (Partner and child)
  • Settle in the UK (Child, long residence, refugee and other categories).

The online application form for each visa route will be different, so make sure to apply under the right category.

Documents to Bring to the UKVCAS Center

If you’ve submitted your online application, you’ll be asked to bring a list of documents to the appointment center. You’ll be given clear instructions about what these documents will be. But just to get a general idea, here’s what you need to bring:

  • An appointment confirmation letter,
  • Supporting documents (if you haven’t uploaded them already),
  • Travel documents or passport.
