A Practical Guide to Applying for a Visitor Visa

Last year, around 2.7 million visas were issued to people seeking entry into the UK. So it’s clear that the British country isn’t being stingy with its visa process.

However, even with such a high number of visas being granted, there are many cases that were refused, for reasons that might just surprise you.

If you’re applying for a visit visa to the UK, follow the information below to ensure that your visa application is granted.

Tips for Applying for a UK Visitor Visa

Apply Early

Especially if there’s a specific event you need to attend! Submit your application at least 2-3 months before your desired date of departure so you have enough time to gather your documents. If for some reason, your visa application is refused, you’ll still have enough time to either apply again or appeal your case.

Bundle Your Documents Properly

Do not use staples to bind your documents. Either use paper clips (only when affixing your picture to the documents), or just file them together.

Use the Most Current Form

Rules of immigration change from year to year. When searching for the application form, make sure that you use the most current form from the UKVI website; otherwise your application may be refused due to it being invalid.

Fill the Form Correctly, without Mistakes

Fill out your form using a pencil initially so you can correct any mistakes, or print multiple copies of the form so there’s no issue. Do not make any mistakes on the application form, and be sure to use block capital letters, using only black or blue ink. Do not mix inks.

Have Current Documentation

You’re required to provide documentation that’s valid for up to three months i.e. it should have complete information regarding your finances and movements for the three months prior to applying for the visa.

Show a Financial Footprint, even if you’re Not Paying

If your partner or parent is paying for the trip, do not skip on showing your documentation as well, especially if you’re a working individual. This will show your caseworker that you have a current job, one you actively earn from, and that it is something you will need to return to.

Pay Attention to Your Cover Letter

Give a brief description of your intentions for the trip, your purpose for visiting the UK, what your plans are once you are in the UK, when you will return, why you will need to return, and how you respect the rules of immigration set by the UK government. Think of this as pleading your case in front of a grand jury.
