A Short Guide to Making Your Case Stronger for a Spouse Visa to the UK

When it comes to completing their UK spouse visa application, not a lot of people understand the details—what the application warrants and how you can make your case stronger.

That’s where a reliable visa lawyer in the UK can help.

Applying for a UK Spouse Visa

Wembley Solicitors already has a blog on the basics of getting your spouse visa approved on the first attempt. But this blog goes into further detail on two main components of the spousal visa requirements:

The Genuine Relationship Test

This test is essentially a checklist for confirming the couple’s relationship. So, let’s say, you’ve both been together for several years and even lived together, the documents you’ll need to prove the potency of your relationship would include:

  • The tenancy agreement or a joint mortgage
  • Photographs of the special time(s) you’ve spent together
  • Text messages and chat logs
  • Travel documents or proof that shows that you’ve both visited each other at least once before getting married
  • Evidence such as birth certificates of any children you may have had together

Basically, any evidence of your relationship. Even adding photos with timestamps of any special gifts received would help!

Financial Requirements

According to the UK visa requirements, your spouse/sponsor will be the one who will have to meet the financial requirements of the visa. They’ll have to prove that once you’re there, you both will have enough money to support yourselves without having to rely on social welfare support.

So, at a minimum, you’ll have to prove that you have £18,600 before tax in your account. This amount could come from self-employment or employment whilst in the UK, maternity or paternity pay, income from rent or shares, or from a pension.

But, if you don’t have this amount, you can choose to use cash savings. The amount should be under your name for about 6 months or more. If not, and if your partner (not in the UK) earns as well, their savings, but not their earnings, can be counted towards the financial requirements as well.
