British Citizenship Requirements You Should Know About

You’ve gotten through the hardest part—applying for an indefinite leave to remain—and are finally at the last step: obtaining British citizenship.

Being a citizen, you would have the freedom and right to be considered a legal person in the UK. You would be able to travel numerous countries, be safe in a secure and stable society, have access to free healthcare, and live permanently in the United Kingdom.

Although an exciting prospect, gaining British citizenship isn’t as easy as it seems to be. But it’s not difficult if you have the paperwork ready that meets all requirements.

Requirement#1: Be of Good Character

This requirement verifies your criminal history—or lack thereof. If you’ve been convicted of a crime or have committed some form of immigration fraud, you will be marked as someone of questionable character. Ergo, you will have trouble gaining nationality.

Requirement#2: Meet the English Language Requirements

You can submit both or either of the two documents. Either you can provide qualification from an IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or you can present evidence of a college degree that was researched and taught in English.

Requirement#3: Must Have Lived in the UK for Over 12 Months After Restrictions Were Lifted

It’s a mandatory requirement that you must be free of any restrictions or time limits on your immigration status. For this, you will need an EU-settled status, a permanent residence card in the UK or an Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Requirement#4: Have Serious Intentions of Staying in the UK Permanently

Given that they’re considering your place as a British citizen, it’s your duty to be a law-abiding, tax-paying citizen in the UK. By working for a British firm, and supporting the economy, you’ll be doing your part in helping the country move forward. Once you have your citizenship, they would want to know if you plan on being an active member of British society.
