Debunking UK Student Visa Myths

Visa processes are intimidating enough without having to worry about the hundred and one misconceptions and warnings one hears when embarking on such a process.

We felt it made sense to provide some legitimate advice for people wanting to study in the UK aside from the usual UK visa requirements and bust a few myths that tend to cause applicants needless stress and anxiety.

Myth #1: Admission Guarantees Acceptance

In an ideal world, this would have been the case. Unfortunately, acceptance in a program of your choosing does not ensure acceptance of your visa application. Visas can be rejected on medical, legal and financial grounds as well among others, so it is always smart to make sure you have all your bases covered.

Myth # 2: Gaining A UK Visa Is Near Impossible

This again is extremely untrue. It might be a process that requires a degree of diligence but if you are meticulous about your application and paperwork, and meet the stated requirements, getting a UK student visa should be no problem for you at all!

The official government website is a great place to start skimming over what you might need.

Myth # 3: The UK Student Visa Lets You Do What You Like

Another common misconception is that once you enter the country on a student visa you can do pretty much whatever you want. This is extremely untrue.

The first thing to remember is all institutions in the UK keep a regular tally with immigration authorities. What this basically means is that if you show up in the UK, do not register with the university you are meant to and do not keep with attendance etc., it is likely you will have immigration authorities looking for you!

Myth # 4: Students On A General Tier 4 Visa Are Entitled To Benefits

No state money is spent on those on general student visas. State benefits are reserved strictly for locals and residents. Students studying in the UK are responsible for their own financial management of their transport, living and housing costs.

Myth # 5: There Is A Minimum Financial Requirement

The clause pertaining to finance is more about being able to show via back statement, evidence that you will, in fact, be able to bear all expenses as a student living and studying in the UK.

Myth # 6: You Can Ghost Your University And Start Working Full Time

On this note, all we would like to say is don’t even think about it! Trying to skip on school to fast forward your financial gains is extremely dangerous and might lead to arrest and inevitably imprisonment. It is best to stick with just what your visa suggests…being a student!
