Do You Qualify for Permanent Residence as an EEA National?

With the Brexit deadline drawing near, we’ve seen an increase in the number of EEA nationals who want to know what their options are if they want to stay in the UK.

If you’re an EU national, you can choose to apply for permanent residency if you’ve lived in the UK for over five years. However, there are some conditions and requirements you’ll need to satisfy. To make the task of applying for the visa easier, we’ve compiled all the information you need to know.

Basic Information on the EEA Permanent Residence

Same as an Indefinite Leave to Remain, a Permanent Residence will allow you to live in the UK, whether or not the country actually leaves the EU.

You are not required to pass the ‘Life in the UK’ test; however, if you do apply for naturalization later on, you will need to do so early on. This is why we usually recommend that our clients prepare for the test while they’re preparing for the permanent residence application, so they can apply for citizenship as soon as the former application is submitted.

If you have any criminal convictions, you will be required to provide complete documentation of the seriousness of your crime, which will then be reviewed by the Home Office. In this situation, it’s always best to be clear about your past activities; otherwise, your application can be rejected due to a dishonest claim.

Additionally, you can apply even if you want dual nationality, although the process will be slightly different.
