New UK Immigration Guidelines in Light of the Pandemic

The pandemic has affected everything that shines under the sun—and immigration is no exception. The UK government has released guidelines for both visa applicants and temporary residents, and it’s important for you to know what you’re in for.

Visa Expiring?

If your visa is expiring between 24th January 2020 and 31 July 2020, don’t fret. In the event that you are unable to leave the UK due to travel restrictions or other COVID-related issues, the UK government has ensured that your visa will be extended to July the 31st.

There’s a Coronavirus Immigration Team that’s been specifically set up to deal with relevant issues. You must make a request for an extension with this team in case your visa is set for expiry—preferably as soon as possible. Even if you had already gotten your visa extended until May the 31st (as per the earlier notice), you should request a re-extension.

Additionally, you must make sure to make all arrangements to depart from the UK before the July 31st deadline—provided, of course, that it is feasible.

You can also switch to a long-term stay in the UK if your visa’s expiring by July 31st.

If your visa’s expiring after July the 31st, you can still apply for an extension. However, you’ll need to make a new application, such as by providing proof or stating a new job. You’ll also have to pay the application fee in both instances. The process is online.

English Language Test Centres

In some cases where the visa is near-expiry and people have to submit an application to the Home Office, they have to give an English language test, of course. The problem is: there’s a problem with getting appointments in time.

Now, some test centres have actually resumed services. Find out more about this on the IELTS website. The Pearson test website also has adequate information on their website. If you’ve already made an appointment and it has been postponed, don’t worry. They’ll contact you on their own to inform you of the next date.

If you haven’t made an appointment, there might not be enough time to make one before your visa expires. In this case, you should still make a Home Office application before the visa expires.
