Safety Tips to Prevent Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists remain one of the most vulnerable group of road users, accounting for the highest injury rates and accidents, per mile travelled of all other road users.

And not being protected by a car body, these injuries and accidents often end up being severe and in some cases even fatal.

As such, it is of paramount importance that all motorcyclists must exercise responsible riding to not only ensure their safety but also the safety of passengers riding with them, pedestrians crossing the road, and other on-road vehicles.

This post serves as an educational resource for all motorcyclists, sharing safety tips to help you drive responsibly and safely on road.

Tip #1: When Riding in Daylight Wear a Goggle or a Visor

Sometimes, riding in daylight can be equally challenging as riding at night—especially if the sun is at its shining peak. The sunlight beaming on your eyes can make it difficult for you to see. Therefore, when riding in daylight, you should wear a goggle or a visor to see clearly what lays on the road ahead.

Tip #2: Always Look Out for Potholes

When riding, it’s inevitable that you will come across few potholes. These potholes can make you lose balance and control of the bike, if you do not circumvent them carefully. It can result in bike damage and more importantly it can endanger your safety and the safety of those other people.

Always slow down when approaching a pothole.

Tip #3: Avoid Road Spillage

Riding over a road spillage—sand, rainwater, oil, just to name a few—can reduce the traction your bike has. An exercised negligence on your part, refusing to slow your speed, can make your bike slip. When riding, maintain a sharp focus on road surface and keep an eye out for any road signs indicating a spillage on road.

Tip #4: Always Slow Down Your Bike at the Point of Intersection

When approaching a cross road, make sure you slow down your bike. Road intersections are where most of the accidents happen, for quite often the two crossing vehicles fail to slow down, and end up crashing into the other.

Tip #5: Keep Your Tyres in Regular Check

Issues such as low tyre pressure, worn out tyre or a punctured tyre can make it difficult for you to maintain road traction, and if left unaddressed, your bike can go easily out of control.

Therefore, before hopping on your favourite two-wheeler, it’s important that you check your tyres for any damage and ensure that they are properly inflated.

Almost all motorcycle accidents can be prevented by exercising safety precautions and driving responsibly on road. Let’s come together in the realisation of our responsibilities as motorcyclists and act to make our roads safer.
