What are the Spouse Visa Financial Requirements for the UK?

One of the hardest things about taking the first steps to become an official UK citizen through a spouse is meeting the financial requirements. The minimum financial requirements can be found in Appendix FM of the Immigration Rules. The number of rules can be intimidating for someone hoping to immigrate to the country; however, all applicants should familiarize themselves with the requirements to ensure they meet them when they decide to apply.

When applying for immigration in the UK, there are two main financial requirements that applicants will have to meet: a minimum income backed by specific documents and sufficient income for the family.

Spouses living outside the UK will need to apply for a “leave to enter” while spouses of people living in the UK will have to apply for a “leave to remain”. The rules for both are pretty similar.

Applying for a UK Spouse/Partner Visa

Unless you’re exempt, you have to meet the minimum income criteria for Spouse Visas. For spouses that have no children and are applying under Appendix FM, the minimum requirement is a yearly income of £18,600. The amount goes up by £3,800 for the first child and £2,400 is added for each child after that. The rule only applies to dependent children you may have.

Meeting the Financial Requirement

You can meet the financial income requirement by combining various financial sources including employment, a business, a pension, savings that exceed £16,000, rent or other non-employment earnings. You can even use your income to meet your financial requirements if you’re earning in the UK.

In some special cases, you will be exempt from meeting the minimum financial criteria.
