All You Need to Know About Getting a Fiancé(e) Visa in the UK
If your partner is a British citizen or lives in the UK with humanitarian protection and refugee leave, you can apply for a fiancé(e) visa to go and visit them. Keep in mind that the law requires you to get married within 6 months of your arrival in the UK. However, if your partner is not a UK citizen, you’re only eligible to apply for a marriage visitor visa which allows you to get married in the UK.
Eligible criteria for UK fiancé(e) visa
The main requirements to successfully acquire a fiancé(e) visa include the following:
- You and your partner should be above 18.
- You have met your partner in person.
- You’re not in a prohibited relationship.
- Your relationship is sincere and genuine.
- Any previous romantic relationships should have broken down.
- You want to enter the UK to get married or establish a civil partnership.
- You intend to live with your fiancé(e) in the UK after marriage or civil partnership.
- You and your partner aren’t married or in a civil partnership with another person at the time of the application.
- Both of you meet the financial requirements.
- You know and are able to speak English to the required level.
- Your prospective accommodation in the UK is sufficient and isn’t overcrowded.
Additional considerations
If you aren’t able to get married within 6 months after your arrival in the UK, you can submit an application to get your visa extended. But you need to provide evidence for why the civil partnership or marriage didn’t occur during the 6-month time period.

You’ll also have to prove that the marriage or civil partnership will occur in the next 6 months. Keep in mind that during your stay in the UK, you’d be prohibited from working. Once your wedding or civil partnership has taken place, you can apply for leave to remain in the UK as a spouse.
