All You Need to Know about the “Life in the UK Test”

Easy enough on paper but quite difficult once you get into it, the Life in the UK test should not be underestimated. A necessary document that’s required if you apply for indefinite leave to remain, this test involves 24 randomly chosen questions that are picked from their handbook “Life in the United Kingdom: A guide for New Residents”.

This book covers the entire history of Great Britain, starting more than 10,000 years ago to now. So, let’s say that unless you’re a history buff, you could have your work cut out. But this doesn’t mean there’s no hope.

As a firm that offers legal assistance to numerous clients applying for all UK visas, including the ILR, we have the information you need so you’re well-prepared.

What You Should Know about the Life in the UK Test

Reading the Handbook is Important

The test is based on your knowledge of all the details that pertain to British history. Did you know that King James VI is also King James I? Or which Scottish clan was killed during The Glorious Revolution because they were late in swearing their allegiance to the William II and Queen Mary (not to be mistaken for Bloody Mary)? Or who Sir Chris Hoy is? Rather than taking the chance by watching some YouTube videos, it’s best to stick to the handbook.

Take all Practice Tests

You’ll have to pay extra, but if you pass the 45 tests on the Life in the UK website, you’ll have a much better chance of acing the test on the first try. While all questions are chosen at random for the actual test, these practice tests prepare you for the format and the style of the given exam. Some questions require two answers; some ask specific dates and even nationalities of people born eons ago.

Get a Buddy

While the history of Britain can be a dry topic for some, it’s only when you start discussing the subject with another person, perhaps get into the nitty-gritty of the topic, that you gain interest. For example, the War of the Roses has actually inspired some wars in books such as Game of Thrones. Hadrian’s Wall could be seen as the inspiration for The Wall in GOT as well. Talking about the story in detail will make you more curious about where it leads.

Prepare the Night Before

Have something light the night before so it doesn’t overwhelm your stomach the next day and have a good night’s sleep. Have something fulfilling but not too heavy for breakfast and use the loo before going to the test centre. And leave for the test centre early, so you have plenty of time. And take deep breaths if your nerves get jittery.

 Good Luck!
