Spouse Visa UK Age Requirements (Must Be 18 or Over)
- Details
- Written by: Muhammad Khalid Khokhar
Both you and your partner must be 18 or over on the date you submit your UK Spouse Visa application. There is no maximum age limit, but you must meet all UKVI requirements, including proving a genuine and legally recognised relationship.
You cannot apply for a Spouse Visa if you are under 18, even if you are married or in a long-term relationship. The application will not be considered until both partners meet the minimum age requirement.
Applications may be refused if either partner is under 18 or if the relationship does not meet UKVI eligibility rules.

What Is the Minimum Age for a UK Spouse Visa?
The minimum age for a UK Spouse Visa is 18 years old. Both the applicant and the sponsoring partner must be 18 or over at the time of application. There is no maximum age limit.
If either partner is under 18, the application will normally be refused as it does not meet UKVI eligibility rules.
Why Is There an Age Requirement for a Spouse Visa?
The age requirement ensures both partners are legally able to marry or enter a civil partnership under UK law and can give valid consent.
It also allows UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to confirm that:
- the relationship is legally valid
- both parties can provide informed consent
- the application meets UK immigration and family law standards
This forms part of the wider framework used to assess genuine relationships.
Can You Apply If You Are About to Turn 18?
No. You must be 18 or over on the exact date you submit your application.
If you are still 17, you cannot apply even if your 18th birthday is approaching. The application will only be valid once both partners meet the minimum age requirement.
Does Age Affect Other UK Spouse Visa Requirements?
Yes. Age is only one part of the eligibility criteria.
Even if you meet the age requirement, you must also satisfy:
- A genuine and subsisting relationship requirement
- The financial requirement
- The English language requirement
- Suitable accommodation in the UK
- UKVI suitability and immigration rules
Failure to meet any of these requirements may result in refusal.
What Happens If You Do Not Meet the Age Requirement?
If either partner is under 18, the UK Spouse Visa application will normally be refused.
UKVI treats the age requirement as a strict eligibility rule and does not usually allow exceptions. Applicants must wait until they meet the minimum age before applying again.
