What is a Civil Partnership visa?
The Civil Partner visa is designed for individuals who wish to come to the UK to form a civil partnership or register as a same-sex couple with a UK resident or British citizen. A civil partnership is a legally recognised relationship that provides legal rights and responsibilities similar to marriage.
A Civil Partnership visa is a route to settlement in the UK that allows you to live together with your partner in the UK for up to 30 months (2.5 years). A Civil Partner visa can be extended for another 30 months (2.5 years) if you meet certain eligibility requirements.
Requirements for a UK Civil Partnership visa?
The main requirements for a UK Civil Partner visa application under 5-year route are as follows:
- You and your partner must be at least 18 years old.
- You must be in a genuine relationship with your partner and intend to live together permanently in the UK as civil partners.
- Your partner must be a British citizen or settled in the UK, which means they have indefinite leave to remain or settled status.
- The sponsoring partner (the UK resident or British citizen) may need to meet specific financial requirements to demonstrate their ability to financially support the applicant without relying on public funds.
- You must have suitable accommodation for you and your partner to live in when you arrive in the UK. The accommodation should not be overcrowded and should meet certain standards.
- You must satisfy the English language requirements to prove your knowledge of the English language.
- Depending on your country of residence, you may need to undergo a tuberculosis (TB) test as part of the visa application process.
You must meet all other requirements depending on your circumstances. Immigration rules and requirements can change, so it is essential to consult with an immigration solicitor before applying for a UK Civil Partnership visa.
Financial requirement
You and your partner must have a combined income of at least £29,000 gross year to meet the financial requirements of a UK Civil Partner visa application under the 5-year route. You need to meet this income threshold requirement if you want to settle in the UK within 5 years.
You may be able to use your cash savings instead of income.
English language requirement
You may need to meet the English language requirement for the UK Civil Partnership visa application if you are from a non-English-speaking country. You may be exempt from taking or passing the English language test.
You can prove your knowledge of the English language with an academic qualification, or by passing an approved English language test.
For your first visa application, you must pass at least level A1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale.
