The UK Skilled Worker eligible occupations list shows which jobs can qualify for Skilled Worker sponsorship and the SOC 2020 occupation code assigned to each role. Your job must match an eligible occupation code, meet the required skill and salary criteria, and satisfy the other Skilled Worker visa requirements.

Table of Contents

What Is a Skilled Worker Occupation Code?

A Skilled Worker occupation code is a four-digit SOC 2020 code used by the UK Home Office to classify your job and determine whether it is eligible for Skilled Worker sponsorship and which salary rules apply.

Which Jobs Are Eligible for a Skilled Worker Visa in 2026?

Jobs that meet the UK Skilled Worker route's eligible occupation requirements can qualify for sponsorship, provided the applicant also meets the relevant salary, sponsorship and immigration requirements.

Eligible occupations include roles in sectors such as:

  • IT and technology - software developers, cyber security and network professionals
  • Engineering - civil, mechanical, electrical and aerospace engineers
  • Healthcare - eligible medical and healthcare professionals
  • Education - eligible teachers and education professionals
  • Law and finance - solicitors, lawyers, accountants and financial professionals
  • Construction and skilled trades - certain eligible construction and trade occupations
  • Science and research - eligible scientific and research roles

The job title alone does not determine eligibility. The actual duties must match the relevant SOC 2020 occupation code, which is classified as Higher Skilled, Medium Skilled or Ineligible under the current rules.

UK Skilled Worker Visa Eligible Occupations and SOC Codes

The Skilled Worker occupation table is listed by SOC 2020 occupation code, starting with the lowest numbers. Use your browser's Find function to search for your job title or occupation code.

If you cannot find your exact job title, try a similar title or the occupation code, using full words such as “laboratory” instead of “lab”.

Each occupation is classified as Higher Skilled, Medium Skilled or Ineligible.

Important: SOC occupation codes changed on 4 April 2024, so your current code may differ from an older code.

If you are unsure which code applies, use the CASCOT occupation coding tool to identify the appropriate SOC 2020 occupation code.

How Do I Find My Skilled Worker Occupation Code?

You can find your Skilled Worker occupation code by comparing the actual duties of your proposed job with the Home Office SOC 2020 occupation list and, where necessary, using the CASCOT occupation coding tool.

A practical process is:

  1. Obtain the job description from your employer.
  2. Identify the main duties and responsibilities.
  3. Search for the occupation using the Home Office occupation list or CASCOT.
  4. Compare the job duties with the descriptions under the potential occupation codes.
  5. Check whether the occupation is Higher Skilled, Medium Skilled or Ineligible.
  6. Check the applicable salary and going rate.
  7. Make sure the occupation code used by the sponsor matches the actual role.

The Home Office advises applicants to look for similar job titles if the exact title cannot be found and to ensure the job description matches the work they will actually perform.

Can I Apply If My Occupation Is Medium Skilled?

A medium-skilled occupation can qualify for a Skilled Worker visa only where the Immigration Rules provide a route for that occupation, such as where it is included on the Immigration Salary List or Temporary Shortage List, or where specific transitional provisions apply.

The rules changed significantly for medium-skilled occupations.

In general:

  • Higher-skilled eligible occupations can qualify under the Skilled Worker route.
  • Medium-skilled occupations require additional conditions.
  • Some medium-skilled roles are included on the Immigration Salary List.
  • Some applicants may benefit from transitional arrangements.
  • An occupation being listed in an older Skilled Worker list does not necessarily mean it is eligible for a new application in 2026.

The Home Office states that medium-skilled roles can qualify if the occupation is on the relevant salary or shortage list, subject to the specific rules that apply to the applicant.

Are Healthcare Jobs Eligible for the Skilled Worker Visa?

Many healthcare occupations are eligible for the Skilled Worker route, but healthcare roles can have different salary rules based on national pay scales.

Healthcare applicants should check:

  • The correct occupation code
  • Whether the occupation is eligible
  • The applicable NHS or national pay scale
  • The relevant salary band
  • Whether the Health and Care Worker route applies
  • The applicant's specific job duties

The Home Office states that certain healthcare and education occupations use national pay scales rather than the standard salary calculation used for many other occupations.

Are Education Jobs Eligible for the Skilled Worker Visa?

Certain teaching and education occupations are eligible for the Skilled Worker visa, but salary requirements can be based on national pay scales.

Depending on the role, applicants may need to consider:

  • The correct SOC 2020 occupation code
  • The type of teaching or education role
  • The relevant national pay scale
  • The location of the job
  • The required salary
  • The employer's sponsorship status

The Home Office provides separate salary information for eligible healthcare and education jobs.

Can Solicitors and Lawyers Qualify for a Skilled Worker Visa?

Yes. Solicitors and lawyers are included in the eligible Skilled Worker occupation list under SOC 2020 code 2412, subject to the other Skilled Worker requirements.

Code 2412 - Solicitors and lawyers includes roles such as:

  • Commercial solicitors and lawyers
  • Criminal solicitors and lawyers
  • Family solicitors and lawyers
  • Property solicitors and lawyers
  • Other solicitors and lawyers not elsewhere classified

The published standard going rate for code 2412 is currently £51,600 for a 37.5-hour working week, although the actual salary requirement depends on the applicable Skilled Worker rules and the applicant's circumstances.

Other legal occupations are classified separately, including 2419 - Legal professionals not elsewhere classified and 3520- Legal associate professionals.

Can IT And Software Workers Qualify for a Skilled Worker Visa?

Many IT and software occupations are eligible for the Skilled Worker visa, including software development, cyber security, IT testing, networking and other IT professional roles.

The exact occupation code should reflect the duties of the sponsored position rather than simply the applicant's previous job title.

Can Engineers Qualify for a Skilled Worker Visa?

Yes. A wide range of engineering occupations are included in the Skilled Worker eligible occupations list.

Examples include:

  • 2121 - Civil engineers
  • 2122 - Mechanical engineers
  • 2123 - Electrical engineers
  • 2124 - Electronics engineers
  • 2125 - Production and process engineers
  • 2126 - Aerospace engineers
  • 2127 - Engineering project managers and project engineers
  • 2129 - Engineering professionals not elsewhere classified

The applicable salary must also satisfy the general salary requirement and the relevant occupation's going rate unless a permitted salary reduction applies.

Can Construction Workers Qualify for a Skilled Worker Visa?

Some construction occupations are eligible for the Skilled Worker route, but not every construction job qualifies.

Examples of occupations appearing in the eligible occupation tables include:

  • 5313 - Bricklayers
  • 5314 - Roofers, roof tilers and slaters
  • 5315 - Plumbers and heating and ventilating installers and repairers
  • 5241 - Electricians and electrical fitters
  • 5330 - Construction and building trades supervisors
  • 5312 - Stonemasons and related trades

The correct occupation code depends on the actual work being performed. A general construction job should not automatically be coded as an eligible skilled construction occupation.

Why Is Choosing the Correct Occupation Code So Important?

Choosing the correct occupation code is essential because it determines how your job is assessed under the Skilled Worker rules, including whether the role is eligible and which salary requirements apply.

Key reasons include:

  • Eligibility: Your role must match an eligible occupation code.
  • Salary: The code determines the relevant going rate for your occupation.
  • Sponsorship: The occupation code must accurately reflect the job described on your Certificate of Sponsorship.
  • Compliance: The Home Office may assess whether the actual duties match the selected code.
  • Future applications: An incorrect code can create problems with visa extensions, changes of employment or settlement applications.

Your job title alone is not enough. The occupation code should be selected based on the actual duties and responsibilities of the role.

Skilled Worker Visa Occupation Code Checklist

Before applying for a Skilled Worker visa, check the occupation code, eligibility classification, salary and sponsorship details together.

Use this checklist:

  • Confirm the exact job duties.
  • Identify the appropriate SOC 2020 occupation code.
  • Check that the occupation is eligible.
  • Check whether it is Higher Skilled or Medium Skilled.
  • Check whether the Immigration Salary List applies.
  • Check the current going rate.
  • Check the £41,700 general salary threshold.
  • Check whether a permitted salary discount applies.
  • Confirm the employer has a sponsor licence.
  • Confirm the Certificate of Sponsorship details.
  • Check the English-language requirement.
  • Check dependant eligibility if applicable.
  • Check the latest Immigration Rules before submitting the application.

The Skilled Worker route involves more than checking whether a job title appears on an occupation list.

The occupation code, job duties, salary, going rate, sponsor licence, Certificate of Sponsorship and immigration history all need to fit the applicable Immigration Rules.

An error in the occupation code or salary assessment can result in an application being refused or create problems with future immigration applications.

We can help with:

  • Skilled Worker visa eligibility
  • Occupation code assessment
  • Salary and going-rate assessment
  • Sponsor licence issues
  • Certificate of Sponsorship
  • Skilled Worker visa applications
  • Switching into the Skilled Worker route
  • Skilled Worker visa extensions
  • Change of employment
  • Skilled Worker dependants
  • Immigration Salary List cases
  • Settlement and ILR planning
  • Complex or refused applications

If you are unsure whether your job qualifies for a Skilled Worker visa, get legal advice before submitting your application.
